How to Carry Your Dog or Cat in a Backpack – And Should You? A Guide for Active Pet Parents
Are you wondering whether to go on holiday with your dog or cat? A dog backpack or cat backpack is a practical way to bring your pet anywhere you dream of – on a mountain hike, a seaside trip, or a long walk through the city or forest. But... how do you get your pet used to being carried in a backpack? Check out our step-by-step guide – we’re sharing both our experience and our customers’ tips :)!
1. Why choose a dog or cat backpack?
A dog or cat backpack is the perfect solution for smaller breeds and pets up to 12 kg (as long as you can carry them), senior dogs or those recovering from injuries, as well as cats that don’t tolerate traditional carriers. It’s also ideal for cat parents who want free hands and more comfort on the go! With a backpack, you can safely bring your pet wherever their little legs wouldn’t reach.
2. How to get your pet used to the backpack – useful tips:
- Step 1: Introducing the new item. Let your dog or cat sniff the backpack. Place a toy or treat inside – and yes, plenty of treats!!! Make sure the backpack is stable (lean it against a sofa, wall, or hold it yourself). If it tips over, it could scare your pet and make the next steps harder...
- Step 2: Short indoor sessions? Some guides recommend short sessions indoors – but in our experience, NOT ALWAYS! It depends on the pet. If you have an active dog, there’s no chance they’ll “enjoy” being confined in a small moving space. Such a dog needs to be tired out first so that the backpack feels like a cozy moving bed :) If you have a strong-willed cat, they need to decide for themselves to enter. Leave the backpack out, let them explore, and give them time. Many cats (though not always) prefer being shielded from external stimuli – so choose a backpack that matches your cat’s needs. A senior dog or one recovering from an injury may still hesitate. Try some mental stimulation first – a nosework session, a short game – then attempt short sessions with the backpack. Always reward and stay patient – it’s a process, not a one-time task :)
- Step 3: The first walk. Start with just a few minutes in your neighborhood. Talk calmly to your pet so they hear your reassuring voice and feel your calmness. Reward immediately after taking them out. You can also let them down mid-walk so they can stretch their legs and relax on solid ground :)
3. Used backpack – is it a good idea?
A second-hand dog or cat backpack can be a cheaper option – why not! Just make sure it has no damage, zippers work, and the interior is clean and hygienic. Not all backpacks are machine washable, so sometimes a wipe-down is all you can do. For safety and hygiene, we recommend models with breathable panels made from durable mesh, easy-to-clean materials, and a removable bottom pad for washing. The base should ALWAYS be firm and ideally washable.
4. How to choose the best backpack for your dog or cat?
The best dog backpack or cat backpack should be:
- suited to your pet’s weight and size – and personality (some prefer snug spaces, others need more freedom),
- ventilated, with reinforced mesh panels,
- comfortable for you – with wide straps and a padded back (you’ll be carrying those sweet kilos :)),
- easy to clean, with a washable base,
- safe, with secure closures and an internal safety leash.
5. Traveling with your pet – why a backpack is ideal
You can wear the backpack right away or fold it flat into your suitcase and use it only when needed. Perfect for taking your pet:
- to the forest, mountains, or lakeside,
- on a cycling trip,
- on a train, bus, or airplane (with the right models),
- through crowded city streets,
- or even to a restaurant – where they have their own safe space.
Holidays with your dog or cat in a backpack become easier, calmer, and far more comfortable – for both pet parent and pet.
Summary:
Is it worth carrying your dog or cat in a backpack?
We say ABSOLUTELY YES!!! If you want to share adventures with your pet but they can’t always walk on their own – or you just want to protect their joints and paws – a dog or cat backpack is a fantastic option. The key is patience, a positive approach, and choosing the right model.
